Winemaking First produced in 1960, the second wine of Casa Ferreirinha Reserva Especial comes from the most cosseted vines within Casa Ferreirinha’s portfolio, principally Quinta da Leda and select higher altitude parcels.  Vines that are earmarked for Barca Velha, its iconic flagship. And just like the Grand Vin, the wines made from these grapes are aged for two years in French oak and spend another five years ageing before release. Only then, after considerable ageing and regular sampling, does Chief Winemaker Luis Sottomayor know whether the contents of these barrels make the ultimate cut for Barca Velha.  If he has a scintilla of doubt, he must decide whether they make the cut for Casa Ferreirinha 'Reserva Especial.' The bar is set incredibly high for the second wine too.  This vintage from 2009 is only the 17th declaration of Reserva Especial since 1960.  It is also worth noting that, in hindsight, the winemaker believes that Reserva Especial 1994 was a “mistake.”   It turned out to have the power and complexity of Barca Velha.  The distinction can be wafer thin.

Tasting notes This wine has a deep ruby colour, with powerfully intense, complex aromas of ripe red and black fruit, resin, cedar and tobacco box, as well as floral hints, a touch of minerality, spicy tones of black pepper and clove. From a warm, dry year, it is explosive on the palate and has tannins of excellent quality, well-integrated acidity, prominent elements of red and black fruit and black pepper, and hints of cocoa due to good maturation. It has a long and very elegant finish.

Food pairing With its elegant and complex profile, this wine pairs wonderfully with red meats, game and cheese.

Serving recommendations Best decanted at least two hours before service. Serve between (16-18ºC).
