Casa de Saima 'Tonel-10', 2014
Style/ Colour Red
Grape Varieties 100% Baga
Winemaking The grapes for Casa de Saima Tonel-10 come from ancient, low-yielding vines in Casa de Saima’s oldest vineyard, Vinha da Corga. The grapes are harvested by hand and undergo a first selection in the vineyard. The grapes then undergo a traditional vinification with traditional treading of grapes and natural fermentation in lagares. Casa de Saima Tonel-10 is then is then aged in a large, seasoned, wooden vat for 12 months. Specifically vat number 10 (Tonel 10), which would ordinarily be used for the property’s top Garrafeira wine.
Tasting notes Mid-intensity ruby colour. The nose is plum and bramble fruit, with earthy spice and pine resin. The palate is light to medium in body, though full of red fruit and berry flavours, with an herbaceous touch. The tannins are plentiful but soft, due to the aging in vat, and combined with acidic structure delivers a linearity all the way through a long finish.
Food pairing Cured & smoked meats, duck rice & game.
