Hugo Mendes 'Underdog Talha', 2018
Style/ Colour Red
Grape varieties Aragonez, Trincadeira and Tinta Grossa
The producer Hugo Mendes, a.k.a. ‘The Wizard Apprentice,’ launched his crowd-funded micro-negociant label in 2016 to make genuine wines that express his interpretation of the terroir.
The vineyard/ winemaking Mendes’ ‘Underdog’ range is reserved for his boldest experiments or collaborations with fellow winemakers who push boundaries. In this case, Ricardo Santos of XXVI Talhas in Vila Alva, Alentejo, who is dedicated to making wines in talha, the region’s traditional clay amphora. This blend of Aragonês, Trincadeira and Tinta Grossa was sourced from vines planted schist at 300m altitude (high for the region).
Tasting notes Given provenance and process, this is an uncommonly vivacious, lighter style of Alentejo red with jewel-bright pomegranate, macerated red cherries and hints of raw cacao and Negroni-like botanicals. Fresh acidity and gently pithy tannins extend and anchor the flavours. Delightful.
