Villa Oeiras Carcavelos, NV
Style/ Colour Fortified
Grape Varieties Arinto, Galego Dourado & Ratinho
The producer Carcavelos is a small wine region east of Lisbon, so close that the growth of that city’s suburbs threaten to usurp the vineyards. Currently, there are only a handful of producers left, among the most highly regarded is Villa Oeiras.
Winemaking Following pressing, some of the fresh must (unfermented grape juice) is set aside and has its fermentation halted by adding brandy, this is called vinho abafado which means ‘smothered wine’. The rest of the wine is allowed to ferment to dryness before the vinho abafado is blended in. Together, these are aged for 7 years in barrels to develop oxidative flavours.
Tasting notes Carcavelos is full of fruit. Sweet orange and dried stone fruit, plus a light honeysuckle floral note. The ageing has contributed a hazelnut and almond nuttiness (marzipan due to the sweetness). The palate is sweet but well balanced with caramel and biscuit notes.
Food pairing Perfect as a digestive, with coffee or a cigar after the meal! Try with foie gras, dense cheese or dessert. Baba de camelo, pudim de ovos or Bar Douro's pastel de nata are a match made in heaven.
Serving Recommendations Wines with high levels of sugar and alcohol are best served around 10ºC. Remove from the fridge 30 minutes before serving. Once opened, keep in the fridge and drink within 6 months.
