The producer The usual order is wine then cork, but not in the case of José Silva, Miguel Cardozo and Pedro Coelho. The three friends and co-founders of Pormenor (meaning detail) are all descended from families linked to the cork industry (and coopers). Coelho, the winemaker, sent me the first 2013 releases to review in 2015 and, from the outset, Pormenor’s textural, shapely whites have impressed year in, year out.

The vineyard/winemaking This old field blend comes from an elevated, terraced vineyard at 600-650m in Pombal Ansiães, the Douro Superior.  The grapes were hand-harvested in the beginning of September to preserve acidity.  The wine was naturally fermented and aged in stainless steel vats on fine lees; it did not undergo malolactic fermentation or bâtonnage, to maintain freshness.  Around 10,000 bottles were produced.

Tasting note  A super-salty nose and palate snags the taste buds from the get-go. Revealing nutty, savoury lees and silky white peach fruit going through, it is shapely, with a savoury profile. Slow burn and satisfying, this unoaked wine finds its own balance.
