Beyra Branco 2019
Style/ Colour White
Region Beira Interior
Grape varieties Síria and Fonte Cal
The producer Rui Roboredo Madeira grew up in the Douro Superior, where he also makes wine. School holidays were spent due south, in Beira Interior. It was here, not the Douro, that Rui worked his first harvest in 1987. First harvest, first love? Perhaps, because when the opportunity arose to buy the winery where he’d cut his teeth, Rui pounced, establishing Beyra wines in 2011. Located in the small village of Vermiosa, the area is home to the real prize – altitudinous old field blend Síria and Fonte Cal vineyards on rocky soils. Sourcing grapes from vineyards totalling 60 hectares, some over 100-years-old, he makes no less than three blends of Síria and Fonte Cal and a varietal Fonte Cal.
The vineyard/ winemaking Rui describes this exuberantly aromatic junior cuvée as “a ‘clássico,’ as it’s the most unoaked and pure style I can get from the area.” It comprises around 95% Síria and 5% Fonte Cal from vineyards at several hundred metres above sea level. It is also a blend of soil type (granite, quartz, schist) and vine age (with an average of 70-years-old). The hand-picked grapes were whole-cluster-pressed, then naturally fermented at 16-17 ºC for 20 days. Unoaked, the blend was bottled after four months in stainless steel vats.
Tasting notes Dry, typically citrus-driven, with lemongrass and mineral undertones. The 2019 is just starting to develop a savoury mouthfeel, with gently pithy orange and lime suggestions and incipient honey and nuttiness. Zesty, refreshing acidity maintains persistence and line. Nuanced.
