Cabral de Almeida & Fonseca Jardim de Granito Touriga Nacional, 2017

Grape varieties Touriga Nacional
The Producer Cabral de Almeida & Fonseca is a family affair. The company was founded in 2015 by Rita Cabral de Almeida – the driver – together with her husband, Vasco Fonseca. Rita makes the wines together with her sister-in-law, Mafalda Malgalhães. Like Portugal Boutique Winery, grapes are sourced from carefully selected growers. Born into a family of Dấo wine growers, naturally Rita’s first label originates there. The name - Jardim de Granito (meaning granite garden) - highlights the region’s soil type. The ‘spaghetti western’ granite boulders in the photo are strewn liberally across the Dấo.
Vineyard/ Winemaking The Touriga Nacional was sourced from 25-year-old parcels in Silgueiros at around 500m, surrounded by oak trees, pine forests and granite boulders. The wine was fermented and aged in cement tanks, highlighting the purity of grape and terroir. The cement’s micro-oxygenation “softens and naturally rounds the wine,” says Cabral de Almeida, adding “it is an excellent non-inert material and thermally much more constant for ageing wines.”
Tasting notes This dark, inky, unoaked Touriga Nacional bursts with sweet summer pudding perfume and flavours. It is a bowl of ripe cherries, black and red, with red and blue berry fruits and come hither scents of bergamot, orange oil, sandalwood, black pepper and incipient pine forest floor. A fine, crushed velvet underlay of tannins and incense spice to the lingering finish make for a beguiling wine from tip to toe. A charm offensive in a glass, this wine does not hold back. Nor should you! 6,666 bottles produced.
