The producer Casal Figueira was founded by António Carvalho and his wife, Marta Soares, an acclaimed artist. Carvalho’s family had grown grapes for generations in Lisboa. Having studied in Montpellier, France, he opted for a different path - making terroir-driven, quality wines in a region then largely producing undistinguished bulk wine. Carvalho produced some extraordinarily long-lived wines from his biodynamically cultivated parcels of Marsanne, Roussanne, Petit Manseng and Semillon. Unfortunately, ahead of his time, he could not find an audience for them.
The vineyard/ winemaking Sourced from six small 50-100-years-old gnarled parcels at 200-450m on limestone, located on the wind-whipped (Atlantic-exposed) north-face of the Serra Montejunto. Handpicked, the grapes are whole bunch pressed and, following a short time in tank to settle, the juice is transferred to used French oak barriques and naturally fermented. It was bottled after nine months on fine lees.
Tasting notes Hoovering up the limestone, Chablis-like, this is a limpid, liquid mineral wine, with flint and chalky, crushed oyster shell texture and nuances to the ripe, lemony palate. More body than your average Chablis, but complex and profound, with lingering layers of celery salt and crushed coriander and fennel seed. Thirst-slaking freshness too. Cries out for a piscine match – sea bass with fennel, orange and black olives anyone…..
