Style/ Colour Red
Grape Varieties Old vine field blend (grapes are harvested and fermented together from a vineyard planted with multiple grape varietals). Tinta gorda, tinta serrana, bastardo, rufete, alvarelhão, alfrocheiro, verdelho, malvasia, bastardo branco, posto branco, formoa and more. 70% red grapes, 30% white.
The producer Frederico Machado and Ricardo Alves are the young guns behind Arribas Wine Company. They are intensely passionate about the old field blend vineyards, planted with native grapes which they discovered in 2017, in the village of Bemposta. Machado’s grandparents are from the village but, ironically, the potential of Bemposta’s old vineyards failed to register until he stumbled across them following a party in the village. They are now avidly exploring different soils, altitudes, aspects and grapes, which they showcase through minimal intervention winemaking.
The vineyard/winemaking Saroto Tinto is made from a small, old, field-blend parcel of old-fashioned red and white varieties. The whole bunches are foot trodden in a traditional lagar and macerated for 4 days allowing the juice to start fermenting naturally with indigenous yeast and without temperature control (wild fermentation). This wine is unfined and unfiltered and may present a deposit over time.
Tasting note Full of wild forest fruits with a kick of natural sourness. Acidity adds juiciness and balances the grippy tannins, making for quite a light red.
Food Pairing From grilled sardines to poultry and game.
Serving recommendations Best served at around 16ºC. From room temperature (22ºC) to 16ºC is about 20 minutes in the freezer.
