Folias de baco ‘Uivo Pt Nat’ Pinot Noir, 2018, Douro

Tiago Sampaio is at the vanguard of Portugal's natural wine scene. His Uivo Pt Nat Pinot Noir is made in the Ancestral method, with only one fermentation, without added yeasts or sugar. It’s very pure, with delicate, sappy red fruits; raspberry and sour cherry with a little touch of fresh pepper. In the mouth it is refreshing and crisp, with a strong mineral character, almost salty.

Herdade do Rocim 'Fresh from Amphora' Branco (1L), 2019, Alentejo

This organic white is a blend of Perrum, Rabo de Ovelha and Manteúdo, naturally vinified in clay pots ‘Talha’ and with no temperature control. Fermentation took place using indigenous yeasts and with no addition or correction of must. Two months of skin contact inside the amphora. This is part of the collaborative Nat Cool series of wines. Green golden colour. On the nose it's quite mineral with floral and earthy notes. Remarkable acidity, refreshing and tense.

Pico Wines 'Frei Gigante', 2018, Açores

Named after the monk who planted the first vines on this island, Frei Gigante, is a blend of all three of the main varieties found on the island of Pico in the Açores; Arinto dos Açores, Terrantez do Pico and Verdelho. It is fermented in stainless steel tanks with temperature control and a short ageing on fine lees. Bright and zippy, citrus and floral, mineral and textured with fresh acidity and mild salinity, this is a beautifully balanced complex wine.

Folias de baco ‘Uivo Renegado', 2019, Douro

This is a traditional Douro ‘Palhete’ or ‘Clarete’; somewhere between a rose and a light red. Its a field blend, containing over 25 native Portuguese varieties with nearly equal amounts of red and white grape, made entirely from 80-year-old vines planted on 2 hectares of schist and granite. Natural and unfiltered. Dusky pink, its wild and lively, full of crunchy, bright red fruit with a vegetal earthy and savory finish.

El3mento Red, 2017, Douro

El3mento is a partnership between Luís Pedro Cândido da Silva and Carmelo Peña Santana. Luis is also the head winemaker for Niepoort. El3mento is a field blend from Centenarian vines. It has pronounced floral perfume to its sappy red cherry fruit and lovely intensity, with not a jot of density. Lengthy skin contact imparts delicious lick and lift of spice. Long and fresh.

Herdade do Rocim Indígena Biologic, 2018, Alentejo

Herdade do Rocim's Indígena is made from Alicante Bouschet, Alentejo’s premier red grape. This is the estate’s first certified organic release. Initially a little reduced, allow it to breathe and, on opening up, you will discover a vivid, fresh expression of the variety – very true.  With no oak, naked, if you like, the variety's spicy, savoury tamarind and clove undertones, well-defined blackberry and plum fruit and structuring tannins (gently tactile) are clearly articulated.
