The producer The wines of Herdade do Rocim have become something of a fixture at Bar Douro since winemaking couple Catarina Vieira and Pedro Ribeiro presented a selection of wines from their huge, diverse range at an ‘in conversation’ wine dinner. The range has become increasingly refined, less reliant on extraction and oak, allowing the Vidigueira sub-region’s freshness to animate the wines. From mature bottles like Olho de Mocho Reserva to making wine in traditional talha (large amphorae) and innovative ‘clay barrels’ has revealed another side to this modern estate.
Wine Making Olho de Mocho Reserva is made from Herdade do Rocim’s best Antão Vaz vines, which are over 30 years old and grown on shy-bearing sandy loam soils of granitic origin. The variety is so well adapted to this site that wines do not need to be acidified. Following hand harvesting into 12 kg boxes in the early hours of the 25th of August 2020, the grapes were crushed and, after a 24 hour period of cold skin maceration, fermented in used 500l French oak barrels and concrete tanks for 21 days at a controlled temperature. Aged on lees, initially with daily battonage, the wine matured for nine months in 500l French oak barrels.
Tasting notes Pale yellow with pebble-in-the-pond rippling minerality to nose and palate. A blade of refreshing saline-edged lemony acidity makes for a long, well-focused, persistent finish, with hints of lemon verbena. Skilful oak use revolves less around flavour, more around structure. For now, the 2020 Reserva is mouth-watering and fleet of foot, but nutty and putty undertones, together with gently mouthcoating lees, hint at the textural/flavour development to come with time in bottle.
