Horácio Simões Tradicão White 2019
Style/ Colour White
Grape Varieties Boal de Barreiro
The producer Founded in 1910 by José Carvalho Simões, Casa Agrícola Horácio Simões is best known for the Simões family’s stunning range of fortified Moscatel de Setúbal. However, Horácio Simões is no one trick pony. The esoteric portfolio of sweeties includes a delicate Late Harvest Moscatel Roxo and boisterous fortified Bastardo Licoroso. As for dry wines, two rare old vine plots produce beautiful expressions of the region’s traditional Boal de Barreiro and Castelão grapes.
The vineyard/winemaking From a sandy, one-hectare parcel of centenarian Boal de Barreiro, the wines are made by third generation winemakers, Pedro and Luís Camacho Simões. The must was barrel-fermented in in French Oak barriques (primary and malolactic fermentation), prior to lees-ageing with a vigorous bâtonnage for 6 months.
Tasting note With old vines stamped all over it, fruit is not the star of the show. There is nothing shouty or domineering about this old vine Boal de Barreiro. It is a whisperer of wine lovers, with its slow burn, lingering palate. Unfurling, it reveals beguiling bath salt and herbal riffs, with super-subtle inflections of orchard fruit and lemon fruit. 4,000 bottles made.
