The producer Precision is the word that springs to mind when I think of Jorge Moreira and his wines. And it would seem it is in his winemaking DNA. In 1996, he made his first red wine whilst working at Real Companhia Velha in the Douro. Rather improbably, it was a Cabernet Sauvignon. The talented winemaker returned to the company as Technical Director in 2010. In and amongst (indeed still), he has been making wines for Quinta de la Rosa and, since 2001, his own baby, Poeira.
The vineyard/ winemaking This wine is sourced from Quinta do Poeira’s old field blend vines and younger plantings of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Sousão and Tinta Francisca, higher up the slope. It was partly foot-trodden and fermented in granite lagares and partly fermented in stainless steel tank. The wine was aged for 14 months in used French oak barrels and bottled in March 2020.
Tasting notes Medium bodied, with smooth, sweet silky plum, black currant, berry and cherry, with raspberry and a lick of cedar oak. Impeccably managed fine, powdery tannins (a Moreira signature) and juicy acidity make for a seamless flow. Restrained, elegant, with a floral scented finish. 20,000 bottles.
Food Pairing Grilled red meat, Dry-rub pork ribs, Mirandesa steak
Serving recommendations Serve at a temperature of 16 to 18ºC. Drink 2021-2026
