The producer Injecting a bit of sunshine into our lives, Carlos Coutinho produces bright and breezy Vinho Verde and is a co-founder of PAEZ Portugal, the espadrille specialist. Seven generations of his family have cultivated vines, almonds, cherries and cereal in Vinho Verde’s Baião sub-region. But he was the first to bottle the fruits of their labour, in 2008. My first encounter with the deliciously fruity, off-dry 2013 Avesso suggested that Cazas Novas was a name to watch. Not least since partner/winemaker Diogo Lopes is a protégé of Anselmo Mendes and, with 24 hectares of Avesso, the Coutinhos own the largest holding of this rising Vinho Verde varietal star.
The vineyard/ winemaking This single varietal Avesso is mainly sourced from Quinta das Tias (a well exposed vineyard, located around 400m) and Quinta de Guimarães (at around 300m). Both have classic granitic soil. Harvested a little earlier than the Colheita, Pure is hand-picked into 25kg baskets. The grapes were de-stemmed then, following around five hours of skin contact, lightly pressed. After settling the must for 48 hours, it was cool-fermented in stainless steel vats for 18 days. The wine remained on the lees for four months with batonnage.
Tasting notes Hints of Thai basil, fennel and tomato plant to the nose, with al dente stone fruit, apricot kernel. Silky, textural lees flesh out the citrus, mineral backbone of acidity. Lovely freshness, with hints of fennel and celery salt to the finish. Drier, subtler, more structured and complex than the Colheita, it put me in mind of a really good Muscadet, but with an exotic touch. Try with mussels or shellfish dishes. 6,000 bottles made.
Food Pairing Shellfish, Mussels, Clams “à bulhão pato”
