The Producer I visited Quinta de Pancas in Lisboa’s sheltered Alenquer sub-region during my first wine trip to Portugal in 2004. Named after the nearby village of Pancas, it was owned by the Guimarães family, pioneers of planting French grapes. I am pleased to say that they retained Arinto, a local varietal hero (it is the principal grape of Lisboa’s Bucelas DOC). Since Pancas was acquired by Miguel Pais do Amaral in 2006, Arinto has assumed greater importance. This ambitious Arinto Reserva was introduced in 2014 and Pancas is increasing its plantings of the variety. Pictured with his dog, Arinto, there are no prizes for guessing winemaker Gilberto Marques’ pet grape variety.
Winemaking Quinta de Pancas has 50 hectares of vineyards. The Arinto Reserva comes from Plot 27, a small 2.94ha parcel on a calcareous soil slope. The vines are 23-years-old. Being north-east-facing, they receive less afternoon sunshine, slowing down the maturation process. This allows for greater flavour accumulation, whilst maintaining freshness. The handpicked grapes were gently whole bunch pressed and the must settled prior to fermentation. Apart from one naturally barrel-fermented (funkier) component, the balance of the wine started fermenting in temperature controlled stainless steel tank, then finished fermenting in 228l French oak barrels (none new). The wine spent nine months in oak, with weekly battonage.
Tasting notes This reserve Arinto reveals lemon thyme and richer lemon curd and nutty oak nuances to its ripe, round, lemon and lime and grapefruit palate. Savoury (sourdough) lees enhance texture and complexity. Harmonious acidity balances the citrus fruit. Ready to go and eminently food-friendly. 2,400 bottles produced.

Serving recommendations Serve chilled at 7-9ºC. Drink 2021-2023+ (sampled at the same time, the 2015 vintage is still drinking beautifully).
