Sem Igual Pet Nat Rosado, 2019
Style/ Colour Sparkling (Pet Nat)
Grape Varieties 50:50 blend of Baga and Touriga Nacional.
The producer Sem Igual, meaning without equal, or different, captures João and Leila Camizão’s ‘out-of-the-box’ label perfectly. João’s family has made Vinho Verde in the Amarante and Sousa sub-regions since the 18th century but, in pursuit of niche, high quality wines, the couple are the first generation to quit Oporto and live in the region full-time. In 2015, Sem Igual caught my eye with a ‘proof of concept’ maiden release – 600 bottles of uncommonly concentrated, textural Azal from 2012.
Continuing the super-selective approach, the Camizãos vinify only 20% of the grapes from the family’s 10 hectares, selling the rest. The cream of the crop includes old vine cuvées from 70-year-old traditional high-trained ‘ramada’ (pergola-like) trellises, whilst new baby, Sem Igual Pet Nat Vinho Espumante Rosado 2019, is from new plantings.
The vineyard/winemaking This no-added sulphur, unfiltered ‘Pet Nat’– is so out-of-the-box, it is classified as a table wine, not DOC Vinho Verde. It hails from the north-facing slope of a vineyard planted by the Camizãos in Meinedo, Sousa in 2016. To protect the fruit, the grapes were pressed softly and quickly with dry ice. The juice was fermented until the sugar content reached 20-25 g/l, then bottled to re-ferment naturally, on lees, without the addition of liqueur de tirage (yeast and sugar). 1,500 bottles produced.
Tasting note My, this is pretty – from its pale, blush hue and floral scent, to its delicate, but lingering wild cherry, red berry and plum fruit. Yeasty apple skin bloom and lees notes lend subtle savoury interest. Persistent, dry (with just 1.5g/l residual sugar), with a fine bead and integrated acidity, this suave, well composed Pétillant Naturel (‘Pet Nat’) is Sem Igual’s first ever release made from red grapes and first ever Pet Nat. Hats off!
